How we price it
Most people want to know what the number is made of before they want it lower.
There are three honest states a plumbing price can be in, and most of the frustration people have with this trade comes from being given the wrong one. A range dressed up as a fixed price is the usual offender.
A fixed price
When the job is the same job whatever we find. A water heater swapped like for like. A faucet. A shutoff valve. You get the number before we start and that is the number on the bill.
A range, with both ends of it
When the work is known and the amount of it is not. Clearing a main line. Running new pipe inside a wall that is already open. You get the top of the range as well as the bottom, because a range with only a bottom to it is an advertisement, not a price.
We cannot price this until we have looked
When the problem is somewhere nobody has seen yet. A leak under a slab. A sewer line that has never had a camera down it. We will say this out loud instead of naming a number that will not survive the job, and we would rather lose the call than win it with a figure we know is going to change.
What moves the number
How we get to it, first and by a distance. A crawlspace, a slab, a second floor, the back of a tiled wall. Reaching the pipe is usually the larger half of the job and it is the half nobody thinks about.
Then what the pipe is made of, how much of it has to come out, whether a wall, a floor or concrete has to be opened and put back, whether the work needs a permit and an inspection, what time of day it is, and what we find once it is open.
If we find something that changes the price, we stop and tell you before we do any more. Nothing extra gets done without you agreeing to it first.
Getting a number out of us
Tell us what is happening and where you are. For some jobs you will get a fixed price on the phone. For others you will get a range. For the rest you will get an honest sentence about why a number now would be a guess, and what looking would involve.
